Yushu Prefecture, located at the source of the three rivers and at the junction of the three provinces of Qinghai, Sichuan, and Tibet, is an important town on the ancient Tangbo Road. The county seat of Yushu Prefecture, Jiegu Town, means ‘distribution center for goods’ in Tibetan. It is located at the midpoint of the line connecting Xining and Lhasa, and has been a crucial trade hub in the Kanba region and a gateway to Tibet since ancient times, witnessing the grandeur and prosperity of the Tangbo Road. It is infused with the lingering fragrance of tea traded along the Tea Horse Road, and bears the glorious history of communication and unity among various ethnic groups over thousands of years. After the founding of New China, with the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway in 1954, this ‘heavenly road,’ which averages over 4,000 meters in elevation, became the busiest route into and out of Tibet. The westward shift of the focus of access to Tibet quickly transformed Golmud in western Qinghai from a desolate Gobi desert in the Qaidam Basin into a pivotal transportation hub on the Qinghai-Tibet Line. To this day, the supply of goods to Tibet primarily relies on this major artery, the Qinghai-Tibet High way.
